Did a Bar Fight Put You in Legal Jeopardy?

BarFight

When tempers flare and alcohol is part of the mix, the results can be pretty serious. Bar fights are notoriously unpredictable, sometimes resulting in unplanned consequences. In addition to the mental and physical outcomes you could wind up with, legal charges could be a very unpleasant and life-altering part of the equation that you might not have factored into your night out.

Nevada Fights in the News

  • When a woman leaned against another woman’s vehicle outside a Las Vegas bar, she wound up angering the driver, who let the offending leaner know it. What began as a verbal confrontation evolved into a three-against-one beat-down, ending only after bystanders pulled the hitting and kicking aggressors off of the victim.
  • One person was killed and three others wounded by gunfire after a Reno bar fight.
  • A woman suffered a broken jaw and lost two teeth after being punched while standing between two men who were fighting.
  • When three people mixed it up in a parking lot outside a Las Vegas bar, one pulled out a handgun. He fired a shot, which hit a parked car, and then everyone scattered.
  • A deputy suffered non-life-threatening injuries when attempting to break up a bar fight involving two men in Virginia City. It seems the two had been fighting one another, and both turned on the officer when he arrived.
  • A fight in a Reno bar led to one person being attacked by multiple others and ultimately suffering serious injuries after being hit on the head with a bottle.

Criminal Charges

These cases involve individuals who lost their cool and became involved in violent encounters. Many are facing serious charges, including:

  • Assault: Using force to threaten or cause fear of imminent bodily harm—punishable by $1,000 in fines and six months in jail;
  • Battery: Physically touching another in a harmful way—punishable by $1,000 in fines and six months in jail;
  • Assault with a deadly weapon: Having a weapon on your person, even if you didn’t use it in a fight—punishable by $5,000 in fines and one to six years behind bars;
  • Battery with a deadly weapon: –punishable by $10,000 in fines and two to fifteen years incarceration depending on circumstances;
  • Battery of protected class: battery against someone in a protected class, such as law enforcement—punishable by $2,000 – $10,000 in fines and 364 days to fifteen years behind bars, depending on circumstances;
  • Battery of protected class with deadly weapon: using a deadly weapon against someone like a deputy—punishable by fines of $10,000 and two to ten years in prison.
